a glimpse of comparison between ASL and CSL (1)


Left top: happy(高兴)

Right top: child(孩子)

Left bottom: man(男)

Right bottom: marry (结婚)

From the pictures above you can see that ASL and CSL are quite different. Some signs share the same motivation, such as CHILD. But some don’t. For example, the signs for MARRY are rather different because of the cultual convention. On a typical western wedding, the priest put the hands of the bride and the groom together. While on a Chinese wedding, they bow to each other to show the commitment of life. It is very interesting to know the culture hidden behind the signs.
